Robert Millikan (1868-1953) won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1923 for his experiments studying the charge of electrons. This work, which began in 1909, helped to prove Albert Einsteins explanation of the photoelectric effect. From the 1920s into the 1940s, he studied cosmic rays. Millikan served as head of the California Institute of Technology from 1921 to 1945. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit for his work on jet and propulsion systems during World War II.
