This must be one of the nicest antique brooches we have seen for a very long time. It dates back to the period of Napoleon III (1852-1870) and is simply beautiful. Although this is the time when many women would prefer to show off their ostentatious jewels, this brooch is elegant, refined and extremely well crafted.
It is made out of 18K solid gold*. It is not plated nor filled.
Its star-like design features several points and forms the base of a rather elaborate setting for several seed pearls of nice luster and good nacre. When examined with a 10x loupe, you can see that 6 demi pearls are missing. But this does not detract from the overall appeal of this unique brooch. Finally, in the center of the star, the designer has placed a beautiful old rose-cut diamond of approximately 0.18cts
The pin is in very good condition.
The brooch is stamped with the French Eagle head hallmark, a guarantee of its 18K solid gold content. It also bears an inscription on the back right where the rose cut diamond has been inserted.
The pin closes with a traditional C closure and a pin stem which is slightly longer than the pin.

*Information on gold jewelry:
- 24K gold is pure gold. (it is not really used in jewellery because it is too soft and not practical for daily wear.)
-18K gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 75% gold. This level of fineness is used extensively in French and Italian jewelry and in most quality pieces)
-14K gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 58.3% gold. (It is used extensively in the US)
-12K gold contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 50% gold.
-10K gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold is the minimum standard that can be called "gold" in the United States.
Antique jewelry and rare items often contain the lower level of fineness, but their value is based on a myriad of other factors.
