The quest for the Indian Kama Sutra began in 1874, as a result of this search, the earliest and most profound discussion of love and sex from around the third century A.D. was found along with other forgotten series of Indian writing on sex. The latest in date was the Ananga ranga, the earliest was the Ratirahasya, The secrets of Rati, spouse of the Love-God. It was known as the Koka Shastra " The Scripture of Koka", and had been composed in the twelfth century by a poet named Kokkoka.
Like the Ananga Ranga it discussed in detail coital positions, forms of love play and ways of satisfying a woman's passions. Dr Comfort has given this the sensitive treatment it requires and deserves, his delicate and lively English communicates the subtle poetry of the original work.
